Anuja Varghese wins the 2023 Dayne Ogilvie Prize for Chrysalis
"My hope, my goal will be to use this prize to open some doors for other queer writers as doors have been opened for me." -Anuja Varghese
At the 2023 Writers' Trust Awards, Hamilton author Anuja Varghese won the $10,000 #DayneOgilvie Prize for LGBTQ2S+ Emerging Writers. During her acceptance speech, she shared her plans to use the prize platform to uplift other queer voices.
"Chrysalis is an electric array of queer, feminist, and mythical short stories. Varghese uses aspects of Hindu folklore and magical realism to transform her stories into powerful tales. Elements of queerness are sprinkled throughout, turning our perception of love stories on their head. The writing is focused and vivid...

"Oh boy. Well I've been a bridesmaid a bunch of times in the past year, and I'm kinda used to it. It's kind of a nice spot. You're kind of in the back. And I had the the great pleasure of meeting 3 of the other 4 finalists and their beautiful souls. And there is a really sweet time when it's just the four of you or the five of you and you're all equal together. And it's like, I was telling some...
Not Here by Shaughnessy Cohen Prize Finalist Rob Goodman
Просмотров 223 месяца назад
“Not Here is both a frightening and reassuring story written with clarity and absorbing analysis. With an American perspective, Goodman explores the decline of democracy and rise of authoritarianism in the United States and what it means for Canada. Deep social and economic ties between the two nations mean Canada is not exempt from the same tyrannous forces. In fact, Canadian politics shows si...

By intertwining her own story with the wisdom of poets and philosophers, Taylor encourages interconnectedness and shared vulnerability to reimagine our overwhelmed society into a more caring on...

This is a deeply compelling, skillfully crafted story packed with in...
Canada by Shaughnessy Cohen Prize Finalist Donald J. Savoie
Просмотров 363 месяца назад
“In this sweeping analysis of the internal divisions and identities that shape our nation’s political fabric, Donald J. Savoie lays bare the contradictions of a federal state and national political institutions that often fail to reflect Canada’s deeply entrenched regional, economic, linguistic, and cultural fault lines. The result has been politics of victimhood and grievance. Even so, those d...

This is a superficial take, I think. They were quite different. Poitier refused roles that were not respectful of black folk. He said so explicitly. Belafonte instead turned them down, often before Poitier took them. He wanted roles that portrayed the full range of black masculinity --ones who if they had roles opposite women, including white women, could express their sexuality like white actors did. He wanted roles where he played bad guys, as he did in Kansas, where he was hardly clean cut. When he didn't get those roles, he didn't play; he gave up on Hollywood for the most part. Belafonte himself delivered a better history of the movies than this critic does, when he got the Spingarn award. I don't think the Uncle Tom image works very well. Poitier and Belafonte were close friends for the most part for decades, but they had their differences. Belafonte made millions from singing that enabled his independence and his plunging neckline, while Poitier had to depend on the white movie establishment to stay afloat. Both were leaders but they were not the same. Though each was far more outspoken than today's celebrities, both about politics and religion.

This book is disgusting, awkward, and I'm appalled you would read this to a group of pre k students. No matter how bad you felt about yourself growing up, you will not indoctrinate toddlers with such a poorly written delusional book. This book only reflects on how you and other bitter women feel not young children. A mixture of mental illness and racism. Its pathetic
